Contrary to his public persona, he cited depression. Fair enough. Nobody wants to see him dead.
However, it's not so much that Smiley's successor will have big shoes to fill. It's more that the likely contenders are yet to advance past sandles with long socks.

And by 'successor', I also mean anyone from the other side of politics that might win the next election. They appear equally inept.
