They mock their mothers with their mothers' eyes

So this is hazelblackberry's first week as a uni student - a graduate student, that is. No, I'm still not ready to tell you what I'm studying. But I am ready to tell you this:

1. Freshly minted uni graduates are so young and tiny - and, my god, so full of themselves. The delightful little cherubs. They look at me exactly as me and my contemporaries looked at the mature age students of our times. Don't try and tell us nuthin', old timer!
2. Most mature age students, except me, are freaks.

Oh, also except for Sarah Ulmer's dad - hey, Sarah Ulmer, I met your dad today. He's a potential ally. I'm so thrilled!

How cool is that! Am so pleased. You guys can burn the place down. Or whatever it is the young-at-heart do when they are at Uni and not already occupying themselves with frightening the school leavers.

I started at Uni last week (all the cool people are doing it) and fell asleep in my 9am lecture. I had been hoping that falling asleep in lectures was something I would leave behind now that I am studying something I am actually interested in, but no, was sleeping like a little puppy after her first day out of the kennel.

And also, how did you work out he was my Dad? I know I told him to look out for you, but I also know that at various times he has called me by: my brother's name; my sisters' names, and by the name of one of his sheepdogs. So I would be surprised and delighted to hear he picked you out of a crowd by approaching you and saying, ´You must be Hazel. I have heard so many wonderful things about you.´

So true. I, too, was guilty of mature age student bias when I was still young and tiny.

In fairness, the ones in my classes were annoying know-it-alls who hogged the tutor's time and were smug about always having assignments done ahead of time even though they had one quarter of the workload of everyone else.

But I'm sure you're not like that :)

Yup, I too was a mature aged student and all the rest were freaks. Fortunately I found other non-freak mature aged students and all was good. Though sometimes I didn't know what was worse - the pretentious youngsters or the freakish oldies? Am sure it will all work out well. Am busting to know what you are studying though...

Hazelblackberry .. You are a true heroine to me. I LOVE your writing..
YOU are SO FUNNY girl...

a couple of points:

1.Rick Astley will also NOT run around and desert you.
kind man that he is...

2. I cannot BELIEVE HB, that YOU would be listening to my DH PB's FAV song of all time...
DEAD EYES OPEN.

O.M.Freakin. G.

( possibly I should also say.. is my LEAST fav song of all time....)

Love your work, inspite your dubious taste in music..:)

Sarah Ulmer - please see next blog entry, and also please email explaining what you're studying and how this came about. Much curiosity.

Lonie P - No, I am nothing like that. Nothing at all. lso, I am full-time so I have the same workload as all the others. Sniff and harumph!

Ianandan - I've met a few non-freakster oldies now. I think it's all going to be okay.

Ngaire - No, you, YOU are MY heroine, lady. And, you know, I have actually linked to you over on my other blog. But hell, I might link to you here anyway.
