There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
A red rose up in Spanish Harlem
With eyes as black as coal that look down in my soul
And starts a fire there and then I lose control
I have to beg your pardon
I'm going to pick that rose and watch her as she grows in my garden

Long ago, I used to wonder what 'Roxanne' thought of her naive admirer. I always thought 'Roxanne' would just laugh at that corny guy and continue with her lucrative career.
As for Rose, I don't know. David Austin might want to keep her for himself.
I think either way poor old Rose was going to be expected to enter into a breeding programme.
As for Roxanne. Yes, I wonder if after all that pleading her only response was, "Buzz off, you little creep."
I think you are reading all this wrong and by 'lose control' he may mean murder with a 'pick' and then bury her in the garden. It is a little more morbid but still just as powerful.
Better than picking his nose.
(I spose.)

With eyes as black as coal and Motown in his soul,
he's definitely no Tim Hardin.
He's gonna pick his nose, show everyone he knows, includin' Dolly Parton.
