Eyes and Ears - 22/02/2008

I'm on holidays for two weeks before uni begins and I'm like some little old retiree. I settle down in the afternoon for a bit of Sherlock Holmes and wake a couple of hours later, feeling frowsy, book having slipped to floor, and drool having slipped down my chin.

Which is to say: I'm not very far progressed in my reading.

Reading:
The Return of Sherlock Holmes. I'm finding it hard going, and not just because of the nanna naps. I just don't think I'm in the mood for Holmes and his lap dog, Watson. Last night I read 'Charles Augustus Milverton', a story about a vile blackmailer wreaking havoc in the lives of the genteel folk of London. It seemed to me that I'd read a Poirot story in a similar vein. I'll have to see if I can dig it out. I was delighted by this line in 'The Dancing Men':
"It is my duty to warn you that it will be used against you," cried the Inspector, with the magnificent fair play of the British criminal law.
It warms the cockles, does it not?

I think I only actually read a Sherlock Holmes story about 4 years ago. I never realised what an arrogant druggo he is.

The drugs - well, so what? But, yes, he is arrogant, and Watson quite lacking in spine.

Are you suggesting that dear sweet Aggie pulled a Jeffrey Archer? ( I love the fact that now he has put a disclaimer that certain stories were "inspired" at the beginning of every collection. And he wondered why people believed he comitted perjury?).
