"I'm your biggest fan."

I couldn't be bothered walking down the street today to forage for some lunch. I wish I could say I was too busy but facts is facts: I just couldn't be bothered.

My colleague, Canned Ham, was heading downstairs to our building's cafe, not-at-all-affectionately known as Cafe Roadkill. She said that things had changed, I should give it a go. I went with her.

They did have some rather tasty looking sandwiches and a nice collection of salads. I ordered a small container of roast vegies. The Ham and I decided to sit outside while we ate. As I headed out the door who should I see at a table but Tim Winton. I whispered to the Ham, "Look! It's Tim Winton!" She wasn't as excited as me about the sighting but she did say a couple of times during lunch, "For God's sake, stop looking at him." I couldn't help it. Tim Winton! At Cafe Roadkill!

And, I'll tell you what, those roast vegies weren't half bad.

So what do Australians call Australian literature? Do you have a fancy short form like what we call "Can Lit"? (Or sometimes in bookstores they'll slap a couple of red maple leaves around and call it "Canadiana".)

If I ever spotted Douglas Coupland*, I'd probably have the same reaction as you did to Tim Winton.

* Even though he's not one of our Canadian literary darlings. No, we reserve that for people who write about India or Sri Lanka, or elephants in Africa.

I think we just call it Australian Lit? Or maybe AusLit.

Australiana is something else altogether.

Mind you, I don't LOVE all of Tim Winton's stuff. The earlier stuff is great. Some of the later stuff is almost embarrassing.

Yes, like Dirt Riders. Is this the literary equivalent of selling out? And Karen, I think I studied that author a few years ago!

k, I think the title is Dirt Music (which is no good). He also wrote The Riders (which is good).

Was that when you were studying for your BACHELOR OF ENGLISH???
