The Dunes of the Cape

On Sunday Grumpy and I went for a little drive up the coast, just to enjoy the fresh sea breeze and the view. Also, I got to have a Mr Whippy! A strawberry nut sundae - my favourite.

Anyway, just north of Mullaloo, there are two fantastic houses overlooking the beach. The first is a mansion done in finest mock Tudor style. Nothing says seaside livin' like mock Tudor.

The other house Grumpy loves to call the 'maldicion you'* house. The second storey has a long thin verandah jutting out from the front of it, and it is home to a swimming pool - a swimming pool in the air! Of course, we don't know the owners and just hanging round out the front panting with admiration and envy isn't going to get us an invite indoors - and, more pertinently, upstairs and outdoors - but I'll bet that when you're lolling about in the pale blue water and you look westward, you don't see the road, and possibly not even the beach teeming with the great unwashed, all you see is the Indian Ocean rolling away to the horizon. What indulgence. And later you won't be futilely rinsing sand out of all the cracks.

*You think he actually says 'maldicion you'? You dumb maldicioner.

Ah, Mullaloo, the beach of my youth (at least until I could drive to Scarborough).

Anyway, on subsequent holiday visits, JMo has called that strip of houses some pretty strong words.

I personally love the Mock Tudor (at least the irony), and note that while the pool in the air might be cool, the other features of said house exude that 'money can't buy class' feel of such neighbourhoods.

I think you're a bit harsh on some of them houses there. Anyway, it's a bit like the Serena Williams syndrome - people think her arse is too big for the outfits she wears, but is that going to stop her from wearing them?

I love Vincent Price's views on such things:

Art collector (curling a lip at a painting Vincent had just bought at auction): "What do you call that!?"

Vincent: It's called "I like it."

And furthermore:

Mock Tudor, Mock Tudor
made from white pewter.
Slave-mined in Malaysia
and shipped to Westralia.

Mock Tudor, Mock Tudor -
black trim flown by Garuda
from the forests of Sarawak
not by road like Jack Kerouac.

Mock Tudor, Mock Tudor
measured up by computer,
and assembled by you
in pristine Mullaloo.

Mock Tudor, Mock Tudor
at your beach house in Kuta
Sympathetic, unique,
a classic, yet chic.
Never unsightly.
You've touched the earth lightly.
