Mum's the Word

Today is t.'s fourth birthday. I rang k. for a chat and to ask her what her young son would like as a present. She was kind enough to tell me that I buy good presents and therefore had no suggestions. Kind, but also unhelpful. k. did say that she wanted him to just get a few small bits and pieces, so as not to become spoiled.

She was, fortunately, able to elaborate on 'small'. "He is rather fond of pearls and diamonds," she said. "And he really likes to see them on the woman he loves most in the world."
