I've begun reading Kingsley Amis's 'The King's English'. What a terrific book. Run, don't walk, to your nearest book store or library and read it. Like, now (wipe out).

Bonus
Used to mean additional benefit. Then quite recently lazy and ignorant writers, perhaps foggily remembering or hearing that bonus was a Latin word meaning good (adjective: a good thing would have to be bonum), started to write about an added bonus, thus with unconscious ineptitude saying additional twice over. Who cares? Only you and me and the occasional reader.

Can I just say: guilty as charged.

I picked this out of an odment bin years ago but it made me so insecure about writing anything I haven't looked at it lately although I do remember what he said about "bollocks".
Not to worry. Mr Amis is in no position to critique anyone's work these days.
