Fiscally Speaking

Grumpy rarely does any birthday or Christmas present shopping these days. And I'm not accusing him of being a lazy maldicion (not in a public forum), it's just that he never seems to have the time, and my eyebrows have been raised on more than one occasion at the lack of imagination. And I always feel a little sorry for his family members when he does do the shopping, though that is tempered by the knowledge that we won't be there when they open it so no smiling politely will be required.

So I've been on at him about Mother's Day. Really, a boy should be the one organising something for his mum for Mother's Day. The Busy Walker has been a pretty good mum and she doesn't scrub up too badly in the in-law stakes. So today he rang me to say he was just stepping into the Oxfam shop to arrange his mum's present.

Not long after that I needed to do some internet banking. The transaction from Oxfam had already gone through our account. Eyes goggled and brain boggled at the amount spent. Not that I objected, mind. I just thought it was unusual for Grumpy to commit to spending such a large sum. He does come from good Scottish stock, on his mum's side. I called him.

"What on Earth did you get your mum?"

"Oh it's great. This huge table cloth. Wish you could see it. It's terrific!"

"And that's it? Nothing else? I was a but surprised at how much you spent."

"How much?"

"This much."

"Hells bells. Well, to tell you the truth, I was in such a panic to find something I didn't even look at the price."

Now I just have to find something for Bezley. Hope there hasn't been a run on stock at the $2 shop.
