The Beverage of Dorian Gray

The New Girl came into my office the other day to ask if I knew of any places around the traps that sold decent coffee. She desperately needed to be able to pick up a good coffee on her way into work.

"Sorry," I said, "I don't drink the stuff."

"Oh neither did I until a couple of years go. But if you start out on long blacks, it makes all the difference. If you can drink a long black, you can drink anything. That's how I trained myself to like coffee. Now I'm addicted to flat whites."

"Sorry, why would you want to train yourself to like coffee?"

"Oh, you know, it was a maturity thing. You go out with your friends and they all order a coffee and you order a hot chocolate. It felt childish."

"I know what you mean. I get around it by ordering a coke. On the rocks."

I am an avid coffee drinker---like it's an afliction---and yet, throughout my life, I have surrounded myself with Non-Coffee Drinkers---from my best friend to three guys I almost married (that's another story--). I think being a Non-Coffee Drinker in today's social structure takes Real Backbone.

This New Girl is ... like ... strange...

Is that the measure of maturity today? The strength of the coffee you drink?? Does that mean Jesus, Ghandi, Alexander the Great and Mother Theresa were all immature and childish?

What a sad sad culture.

Then again, I'm drinking a coffee as I type...

So how does a flat white compare to a double double?

As a non coffee drinker myself, I often feel I'm socially unacceptable because I don't drink the stuff.
"Coffee...Tea?"
"No thanks"
"What? You sure?"
"I don't drink it"
"OMG how do you survive the day?"

step onto soap box...
Ever noticed that Morning Tea facilities are always tea and coffee with a few biccies? There is never anything for the non caffiene addicted. Often not even water. (GIve me a juice or something!) I just eat an extra biccie without feeling guilty.

Thank God! More non-coffee drinkers! I was beginning to feel like the only one. I like coffee icecream and coffee cake, but hate the actual drink, although I have been known to drink it with lots of milk and sugar when I feel I've had to.

Plum: It may not take backbone but it always seem to entail Much Explaining.

Pete: I dunno. Maybe it was their childlike curiosity that really took them places.

Karen - a double double sounds like some kind of exotic, and possibly naughty, dance.

TB: Yes, agreed. Mornign tea is ALWAYS coffee & tea, rarely even a humble jug of water.

Lonie: Me same. Coffee flavoured anything except the drink.

I don't drink coffee or and rarely drink anything caffinated. I drink Hot Chocolate and hold my head up high. My current favorite is White Hot Chocolate from Dunkin Donuts (Northeastern American chain). It rocks. I also order steamed milk with caramel flavoring if I am at a coffee bar.

I think the real sign of maturity is ordering what you want and not what others think you should be having.

My husband is a vegetarian who does not drink alcohol, anything carbonated, coffee or tea. That often takes a lot of explaining.
