Today I was cruising around in the boss's car - automated everything; even the drink holder: supersize me! - when 96fm had their fab five, or whatever it's called, on. You know, the one where they play five songs and you have to guess the link between them. Today's theme was bands with repetition in their names: Toto, ZZ Top, Goo Goo Dolls and, would you believe, David & David, with their dreadful little song from the 80s, "Welcome to the Boomtown." I nearly drove the car off the road when it came on. I used to love that song when I was a teenager and all deep and tortured.
But it's actually a complete load of crap! Amazing!
What a couple of kill joys those guys were. They obviously hate the idea of anyone having any fun. I bet when they were at school they were the biggest, whingiest dobbers ever.
I found the lyrics here and I'm glad I did. I was relieved to learn that when they were moaning (soulfully) about Handsome Kevin, who got a little off track, they weren't then screaming that "he always listens to Lou Gramm, he always listens to Lou Gramm." I mean, I spent all those years wondering what their problem with Mr Gramm was. Sure he was in Foreigner and he did write Midnight Blue and he did have all that hair, but that hardly makes him a symbol of Bright Lights Big City-type dissipation, surely?
I don't know who the fifth group was in the set. I was back at work by then.
