Curtseying Deeply

When I was a young girl I thought my grandmother, Don Mary, knew Britain's Royal Family. It was the way she spoke so confidentially about their personal affairs, innermost turmoils and their reasons for behaving the way they did.

Perhaps they popped in for tea and cucumber sandwiches on their way to another, only slightly more glamorous destination.

So I was very well-versed in royal etiquette. I was never allowed in Don Mary's presence to refer to Diana as Princess Diana. It was Lady Diana or the Princess of Wales or Diana, Princess of Wales.

This knowledge has come in most handy during my long & distinguished career as confidant to the royals. (Never the Royals: for that is a most delectable biscuit made by Arnott's.)
